Hydride Shift

Hydride Shift Definition:

A type of carbocation rearrangement that involves the migration of a hydride ion (H-).

Hydride Shift Explained:

The rearrangement occurs when a Hydrogen atom in a carbocation migrates to a carbon atom with a charge of +1 which comes from an adjacent carbon. The shift takes place to form a more stable carbocation, so if one is unstable, the shift makes a new carbocation arrangement stabilizing its formation and energy.
