For chair conformations of substituted cyclohexanes, a position that is approximately perpendiclar along the equator of the ring.

Equatorial Position Explained:

Carbon having a cyclohexane ring makes 4 bonds, the bonds to non-ring atoms are know as equatorial depending on the bond and angle.
