Addition Reactions Definition:

Reactions that are characterized by the addition of two groups across a double bond. In the process, the pi (p) bond is broken.

Addition Reactions Explained:

The diagram below shows an alkene undergo an addition reaction with two arbitrary groups (“X” and “Y” group). After reaction is completed, the pi or double bond is broken, adding the two groups across the double bond:
