A term used to describe two identical groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms.

Vicinal Explained:

Any two functional groups bonded to two carbon atoms that are adjacent to one another. Set by the reaction between a halogen and an alkene. An example of this is the reaction between ethylene and chlorine to give 1, 2-dichloroethane (ethylene dichloride).
